Frequently Asked Questions

  • A First Moon Circle is a gentle, age-appropriate rite of passage for girls ages 9–12 as they approach puberty and menarche, their first period.

The circle weaves together clear education, reflection, and ritual to help girls understand their changing bodies and feel prepared, supported, and confident as they move toward this important life transition.

  • No. Most girls who attend have not yet begun bleeding.

The circle is designed to prepare girls before their first period arrives, so they understand what is happening in their body and can recognise the signs that their first bleed may be approaching.

If a girl has already started bleeding, this circle can still be a very powerful and meaningful experience. Many people move through menarche without ever being properly supported or informed. This space offers an opportunity to deepen understanding, confidence, and connection with the body, no matter when bleeding begins.

  • No. First Moon Circles are supportive for girls at different stages of their journey.

Even many adults have never been taught about the cyclical nature of the menstrual cycle or how it influences energy, emotions, and wellbeing. Learning how to live in rhythm with the body is beneficial at any age, and this circle lays a strong foundation for that understanding early on.

  • Girls receive clear, medically accurate information about:

    • What periods are and why they happen

    • The entire menstrual cycle, not just bleeding

    • The physical and emotional signs of puberty

    • How to notice and understand their body’s signals

All learning is offered in respectful, age-appropriate language, with space for curiosity and questions.

  • Yes. The educational content is medically accurate and developmentally appropriate.

Each girl receives a take-home information booklet. Many families report using this booklet as a trusted reference and conversation guide for years to come as their child continues through puberty.

  • No. The focus of the circle is on puberty, body changes, and menstruation.

The content is appropriate for ages 9–12 and does not include sexual instruction.

  • That is completely okay.

Sharing is always optional. Girls are never required to speak or share personal experiences. Listening and observing are always honoured forms of participation.

  • The circle is held in two parts.
The first half is a girls-only space.
The second half includes mothers or female caregivers.

During this time, girls receive wisdom, reflections, and well-wishes. This helps them understand that menstruation is not something they face alone. It is shared across generations and supported by a wider village.

  • Any trusted female caregiver such as a grandmother, aunt, guardian, or mentor is welcome to attend the second half of the circle.

  • No. The circles are non-religious and welcome families of all backgrounds.

Ritual is used as a way to mark transition, create meaning, and support learning. It is not connected to any belief system.

  • Creating a safe and contained space is central to the circle.

We establish a clear container of privacy and hold to shared rules and guidelines. Consent and choice are emphasised throughout. Girls may opt out of any activity, and confidentiality is respected.

This allows girls to relax, feel safe, and engage at their own pace.

  • Groups are intentionally small, with 6–8 girls per circle.

This allows for a nurturing environment with connection, care, and individual attention.

  • Girls leave the circle with:

    • A menstrual education booklet to take home

    • A craft project they create during the circle to represent their learning

    • A small gift bag marking the transition

    • Increased confidence and understanding of their body

    • Language to talk about menstruation at home

    • A felt sense of support and belonging

  • Circles are facilitated by Susie Gow, Founder and First Moon Guide of House of 13 Moons, who is devoted to supporting girls and families through this transition with clarity, dignity, and care.

  • Upcoming circles, locations, and registration details are shared on the website. You are always welcome to reach out with questions before registering.
